Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is boxing’s biggest pay-per-view star. His May bout where he dominated Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. generated more than one million PPV buys. The fight was the first to reach a seven-figure threshold since Mayweather-Pacquiao in 2015. It is the first boxing match not involving Mayweather or Pacquiao to register one million buys since Lennox Lewis knocked out Mike Tyson in 2002. The strong PPV numbers pushed Canelo’s payday for the fight over $20 million. Alvarez is set for an even bigger payout for his much-anticipated matchup against Gennady Golovkin in September. Tecate signed Alvarez to an endorsement deal last year. The beer brand often sponsors boxing events, but this was the first time it partnered with an individual fighter. Other sponsors, including Under Armour and Everlast, help Canelo earn seven-figures outside the ring.
