SUITED & BOOTED : Emmanuel Macron

At 39, he becomes the youngest president in France’s history, and the youngest leader since Napoleon.

The new President vowed to bring confidence back to a nation that has been “broken” by a spate of terror attacks and a sluggish economy.

His sartorial style shadows that unusual climb.

Instead of the thousand euro bespoke suits that French statesmen typically favor, Macron’s garb comes right off the rack. According to Women’s Wear Daily, the former banker frequents Jonas et Cie, a father-and-son outfit in Paris’ second arrondissement, where suits go for a relatively inexpensive $370. That’s way cheaper than the $5,000-plus baggy Brioni suits favored by his American counterpart, Donald Trump or the $3,500 and up De Paris two-pieces that Barack Obama wore. It’s also probably a good thing. Macron is shaping up to trim France’s huge public sector and will want to avoid the outcry around pricy clothing that sunk one of his election opponents.

Despite the low price tags—Jonas et Cie specializes in outfitting young business graduates—Macron’s look has helped him get onto numerous best-dressed lists. In 2014, the Financial Times of London named him as the ninth best dressed person in the world, just behind Coppola film heiress Gia Coppola and actress Lupita Nyong’o.

Though he favors sober colors like navy blue and charcoal grey, the slim-fit cuts and open-collared shirts give him an almost Kennedy-esque vibe.

Macron also favors slimmer than usual ties and suit lapels. “The ties are 3 inches wide and while that’s perfectly acceptable, I know of no other politician that wears anything this narrow,” says Kent Wang, the menswear expert and entrepreneur. He adds that Macron’s suit lapels are also slightly thinner than the standard cut on jackets made by Brooks Brothers. “These are youthful choices, subtle, but not in your face. I think they do have a small, subconscious effect on the general public.”

“His look is pitch perfect for what he wants to project: young, modern, different, but not too radical,” Wang adds. “He either knows a great deal about menswear, or he had the help of a consultant.”

Of course, not everyone can pull off Macron’s look, though being naturally slim helps. According to Macron’s tailor, the president-elect has the measurements of a male model.
