Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo is already looking towards life after football as he unveiled plans to invest over €37 million ($40m) in hotels bearing his ‘CR7’ moniker in his native Portugal, Madrid and New York.
And the Portuguese star made it clear that the partnership with his country’s Pestana Hotel Group was the next step into preparing for life after his peak.
The Real Madrid superstar’s playing future has been subject to speculation with former club Manchester United reportedly among his many suitors.
But he has already begun to think about life after football by launching the hotel chain, starting with three in Europe, while a fourth – in New York – is also in the pipeline.
“My job is to play football, but life won’t always be like this,” Ronaldo said. “I have to dedicate myself to this new project and I have the best team in the world around me
“I am young but I feel very fulfilled so this project is exciting for me. I’m thinking about my future, and my son and my family.”
The first hotel is expected to open next summer on the island of Madeira, where Ronaldo was born. Lisbon will be next, with the Madrid hotel due to open in 2017, potentially along with New York.
He added: “I will have the opportunity to be present as all the projects unroll but, of course, I don’t have much time available at the present. But this is all about quality, and I like to be around quality.
“I’m certain that this investment is surely one of the safest deals that I can capitalise on for my future.
“The first hotel will be in Madeira and I want to be at the opening of all of them. I’m very happy with Madeira and the second being in Madrid – where I play – so it makes a lot of sense. I’m extremely happy because this is the biggest project in my life and it’s completely different to what I do.
“We were considering only one hotel originally, so to start with four locations is a big kick-off! It’s like playing for the first time and suddenly scoring lots of goals.
“This came about naturally and it made me feel good about this project. That’s why when you ask about the future, I don’t know.’
Real Madrid have endured a difficult first half of the La Liga season and from the looks of Los Blancos’ players at the club’s traditional Christmas lunch, the team’s form is getting to them.
Portuguese maestro Cristiano Ronaldo was spotted fixated on his mobile phone, as he sat next to compatriot Pepe, with barely a smile raised amongst the rest of his team-mates.
Ex-Tottenham Hotspur stars Gareth Bale and Luka Modric seemed to be two of the chirpiest players in attendance during the event held at the club’s Bernabeu’s stadium.
Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo gave a warm welcome on Friday at the club’s stadium to a little Lebanese boy who last month lost both parents in a Beirut attack that was claimed by the Islamic State group, the club said.
“Haidar, a three-year-old child who in November lost both of his parents in bombings in Beirut, saw his dream come true on Friday when he was given the opportunity to meet his idol, Cristiano Ronaldo,” Real Madrid said in a statement posted on its website.
Ronaldo, wearing a suit and tie, could be seen in a picture posted on the club website giving the boy a hug.
Haidar wore a Real Madrid jersey with his name on it and the Portuguese player’s number 7 on the back.
Cristiano Ronaldo: Fashion icon
He’s lauded as one of the best footballers in the world, his latest match making history and breaking records. But when he’s not reigning supreme on the pitch, Cristiano Ronaldo is busy making his mark in another field: The world of fashion. From modelling for Armani to launching his own brand, we look at Ronaldo’s transformation from soccer MVP to fashion entrepreneur.
Now one of the most marketable athletes world over, Ronaldo got his headstart in fashion modelling Emporio Armani underwear and jeans in their 2010/2011 Fall collection. His toned physique and international appeal made him the perfect fit for the brand.
Earlier this year, the footballer also lent his name –and chiseled face—to Sacoor brothers, a luxury apparel label from his homeland Portugal. Not only did Ronaldo model for the brand (looking very dapper the clothing of course), he was appointed ambassador, gaining Sacoor brothers further worldwide recognition.
Portugal-born Ronaldo, 30, joins a list of ambassadors that previously featured Hollywood actors Patrick Dempsey and William Baldwin.
“This is a huge coup for Sacoor Brothers,” enthuses Hugo Carriço, the brand’s marketing manager. “As you may know, Ronaldo is one of the most in-demand personalities and we believe it is not easy for him to make a commitment to any brand.
“But we managed to do it, and we announced our partnership in January this year. We believe it to be the perfect match,” adds Carriço.

Given his growing affinity for fashion, creating his own label was the next logical step. To date, he’s already released a fragrance under his own name, fittingly titled “Legacy” and launched CR7, a menswear line with everything from shirts to shoes. CR7, a nod towards the number both he and the football legends that preceded him wore emblazoned on their jerseys, recently saw Ronaldo leap from the pages of magazines and billboards onto the runway for the first time and we must say, he’s quite the natural.
