Red carpet : Tom Cruise at NASCAR awards

The biggest surprise of the Sprint Cup Awards was actor Tom Cruise introducing Jeff Gordon at his final Sprint Cup Awards ceremony.

Cruise, who experienced the world of NASCAR as Cole Trickle in the 1990 film Days of Thunder, gave a speech that brought Gordon to tears.

The 53-year-old action star looked quite youthful in a dashing tuxedo as he bounded onto the stage to introduce the four time Sprint Cup winner Jeff Gordon, 44.

While the event, held at the Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas, was mostly staged to celebrate the crowning of new series champion Kyle Busch, it also was to serve as a farewell to Gordon, who’s spent over two decades in the sport.

So when the iconic Tom Cruise took the stage, it’s no wonder Gordon was left trying to stifle tears after Tom’s generous tribute, as could be seen in a clip posted to Twitter by @NASCARonNBC.

After the introduction, the racer made his way to the stage, where he shared a hug with the movie star, before going on with his own speech.
